Detection of mature miRNAs in the HeLa nucleolus. The abundance ratios of the detected miRNAs in nucleolus vs. whole cells are plotted against their abundance in the nucleolus. The box encompasses the miRNAs with high nucleolar abundance (Ct smaller than 30) and nucleolar/cell ratio that exceeds 0.3.

Description: Even under such stringent criteria, 11 miRNAs can be identified as miRNAs that are detectable in the nucleolus with very high levels of confidence (Figure 1D, Table S2). Since the detected nucleolar contents of many of these RNAs are very high, we termed these 11 miRNAs as “nucleolar miRNAs”.
